Introducing Slate 2.0: Make Discovery More Inevitable and Less Accidental. See What’s New

Essity Innovation Report 2026

essity innovations

Essity has built 72 reusable-textile patents across two clusters, yet 98 disposable-core innovations and 383 tissue-production innovations show that its portfolio is still anchored in established architectures. At the same time, sensing, active wound care, technical textiles, and bio-based materials are beginning to change where technical value sits.

We analyzed 19 research clusters totaling 871 listed innovations to map where Essity is accelerating, defending, and selectively stepping back.

Key Signals Reshaping Hygiene & Medical Care Innovations

Essity is facing several transitions at once: pressure to reduce material use, growing demand for clinically validated products, and the need to create value beyond high-volume consumables.

  • Reusable platforms could change where margins are protected. As structural complexity moves into washable textile systems, proprietary fastening and chassis design may become more important than the disposable insert itself.
  • Clinical sensing raises the value of every absorbent surface. Conductive materials, data loggers, and physiological monitoring create a path from product supply toward data-enabled care workflows.
  • Medical products are demanding more active functionality. Wound care and compression technologies are moving closer to device-like intervention, increasing the importance of validation, specialized manufacturing, and clinical integration.

What’s Inside the Report?

Is Essity really moving from disposables to reusables, or running both models in parallel? See where reusable-textile activity is accelerating and why disposable architectures still command far greater scale.

Where is Essity placing the highest-value IP in hybrid hygiene systems? Explore how technical complexity is being redistributed across textile chassis, absorbent inserts, fastening interfaces, and washable assemblies.

How far has digital hygiene moved beyond simple wetness alerts? Trace the technologies connecting sensor-integrated materials, reusable electronics, bladder monitoring, and care-management data.

Which medical categories are becoming more device-like? Examine the technical signals linking wound debridement, compression, imaging, mechanical therapy, and active materials.

Why is traditional tissue innovation slowing while partner activity remains important? Understand how internal R&D priorities are diverging from high-volume manufacturing innovation.

Where could sustainability change the product architecture itself? Review the move toward fiber packaging, bio-based absorbent materials, material efficiency, and lower-waste dispensing systems.

The Research Clusters We Analyzed

  • Tissue-paper production using pulp mixing, embossing, rewinding, web tensioning, roll changing, and process-control systems. (383 innovations)
  • Absorbent-core architectures using embossed molding, asymmetrical wings, reservoir zones, and targeted SAP distribution. (98 innovations)
  • Sheet-material dispensing using rotatable walls, hinged housings, spindles, retrofit mounts, locks, and extraction-control mechanisms. (61 innovations)
  • Fibrous core and surface-layer materials using cellulosics, proteins, nonwovens, functional additives, and bio-based absorbent structures. (47 innovations)
  • Elastic laminate body panels using mapped waistline and leg-cuff zones, selective thread deactivation, and anatomy-specific fit structures. (41 innovations)
  • Reusable outer-cover fastening using detachable inserts, hook-forming areas, engaging patches, and textile chassis portions. (37 innovations)
  • Washable absorbent undergarments using multi-layer fabrics, knitted structures, moisture barriers, and integrated retention layers. (35 innovations)
  • Flat-knit compression articles using double-layer fabrics, controlled stitch density, movable pressure units, and active textile structures. (25 innovations)
  • Hygiene-consumable level sensing using reservoir tracking, proximity sensors, energy harvesting, and electromechanical switching. (23 innovations)

The remaining clusters cover advanced wound dressings and wound-management systems, conductive sensing, disposable core structures, male incontinence fastening, warp-knitted medical substrates, sustainable packaging, soap-strip dispensing, tissue refill systems, and fastener-removal mechanisms. Together, they show where Essity is extending beyond high-volume hygiene into more specialized medical, digital, reusable, and material-efficient technologies.

Key Trends You Can’t Ignore

Reusable hygiene is gaining momentum, but disposables still dominate Essity’s innovation base.
Recent activity shows a clear push toward washable textile systems and detachable inserts. The more important question is whether this becomes a new platform or remains concentrated in selected categories.

Clinical sensing could change what an absorbent product is worth.
Essity is moving beyond simple wetness detection toward technologies that capture physiological and biochemical signals. This could create an entirely different value model around care data, monitoring, and clinical decision support.

Wound care is becoming more active and device-like.
Mechanical debridement, compression systems, sensing, and digital assessment are beginning to converge. The opportunity is not simply better dressings, but potentially a broader system for managing wounds across the treatment cycle.

Traditional tissue innovation is slowing in unexpected places.
Patent activity in core tissue-production technologies has declined while some manufacturing development is increasingly visible through Vinda. This raises questions about where Essity is reallocating internal R&D resources and which capabilities it may no longer want to own directly.

Sustainability is moving from packaging changes into product architecture.
Bio-based absorbent materials, fiber packaging, reusable platforms, and material-efficient cores are developing in parallel. The strongest opportunity may lie in understanding which pathway Essity is backing most heavily and where technical gaps still remain.
